Slovakia
The Tattooist of AuschwitzSlovakia is the homeland of Lale Sokolov and Gita Furman, the country where their lives began and where they would ultimately reunite. It is the place Lale leaves voluntarily to protect his family, the place Gita is torn from by force, and the place to which both return after the war. The novel uses Slovakia as a constant reference point—a symbol of lost innocence, of family bonds, and of the possibility of a future—while also showing how the country's political acquiescence to Nazi Germany made the deportation of its Jewish citizens possible. Slovakia is thus both a geographical setting and a moral touchstone, grounding the story's emotional arc from departure to return.
